Shelf Life of Drontal worming tablets?

Hi, I wonder if anyone could tell me what the shelf life of drontal cat and dog worming tablets is? I have just found a couple of very old packs with no expiry date on them. I'm thinking they may be like best before dates rather than use by dates - they are probably still ok but maybe a little less effective? I would rather use these up than buy new ones as they are rather expensive. Thanks for any help.

There's usually up to 2 years on the tablets when you buy them (from a stockist with large turnover.) I have just looked at my Drontal Plus tablets and there is an exp date on the bottom of 4- as they are packaged in 8s I assume date will be at each end. I would think they are just less effective if really out of date but there are vets on this board who might answer your question.

Did you know there is another wormer out called Cestem? Same drug but different manufacturer and a bit cheaper, Just as an example from Vet Medic now- Drontal Plus one tablet £1.85- Cestem £1.51- also buy 3 get one free. The more you buy , the cheaper they get , so if possible club together with a friend?

  • Thankyou - I have two dogs and two cats so might be able to buy enough to get the price down myself.

Sorry for the duplicate posts, p.c was playing up this morning so I hit refresh and then ended up with three threads!:o

and there I was thinking you were trying to get your next MSE award all the quicker!

I usually buy enough wormers for a couple of years for my 2 dogs as that works out cheaper.(as well as clubbing together with friends- bought a couple of hundred at Crufts one year!!)

I also think there are cheaper stockists online than vet-medic, it's just I have always used them ordering by phone (only just got the internet at home!) There's a thread near the top of this board I think which lists online suppliers.

Personally, i wouldn't use them if they don't have an expiry date. That would indicate that they're ancient

Please don't risk it for the sake of a few pounds :)
  • Agree with Walwin, they've all had to put expiry dates on for quite a while so if there aren't any, they must be old.

They do/did have a date on them but where the packs have been cut it's been cut off - all I can see is exp.. but think perhaps I'll buy some more :o
