  • Follow below steps to open a Euro bank account:

    1. Choose one of the 16 European countries to open a euro bank account (see Resources). Select one of the major countries; it is likely to have a branch in the U.S. It makes it easier to open and manage your euro bank account. Check the banking supervisor's website to get a list of banks (see Resources). Contact a local consulate office of your chosen country in the U.S. to find if it has a branch in the U.S.

    2. Call the bank in the country where you want open a euro bank account or, call the branch in the U.S., if it has one. Request the bank to send an application pack by mail.

    3. Read the application pack carefully. Ensure you can comply with opening requirements. You will need a passport, evidence of income (payslips or bank statements from your existing bank) and proof of address. You will also need to make an initial deposit to open a euro bank account.

    4. Complete the application form accurately. Enclose the application form, documents (must be originals) and your deposit in an envelope, then mail to the bank in your chosen country, or a branch in the U.S. Use secure mail.

    5. Wait for your application to be processed and your bank details mailed. It may take two or three weeks (quicker if using a branch in the U.S.). Your documents and bank cards will be mailed separately.

I think Mack is an American.

If you want a Euro bank account either bank with Citi Bank, open an off-shore account, or you have to fly over to another EU country that uses the Euro and open an account there.

What you documentation you need will depend on the country. If you have a residence in that country it will be much easier.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • Hi Ncollett,

You can vist any high street bank in the UK and open a currency account but they charge various maintence fees.

May I ask if you are going to use your currency account for business purposes? If so, most banks will charge transaction fee's for incoming and outgoing payments and if you are looking to repatriate currency from your account, for e.g. EUR/GBP, your bank is likely to take a 1-2% margin on your exchange rate, depending on your volumes of currency exchange. In this instance I would reccomend using a Foreign Exchange provider or Global Payments specialist.

    Hope this helps

My problem is that I have a villa in the US. I have a UK and a US bank account which obviously has £ and US$ respectively. I take deposits from potential renters and would like to accept euros. Transfering samll sums from one currency to another is too expensive.
PS I have tried Barclays, HSBC and Santander all without success.

  • If YOU own a villa then it is YOU who should dictate the currency you are paid in.
You should not take the currency exchange risk your customers should ie you tell them you want £x per stay and let them send £x to your account not Eurox or whatever.
