Outbound Telesales ?

What is this job like? I imagine it to be completely soul destroying and tedious, would I be correct?

I usually work in inbound customer service but there aren't many if any roles available in my area but quite a few of these outbound roles offering a decent basic.

I've done up-selling and cross-selling but never outbound (but obviously I'll blag it on my C.V and in interview).

Are the targets generally difficult to meet? Surely you must get sick of introducing yourself and reading the same script upto 100 times a day?

Can someone sell me this role?

  • My sisters boyfriend is a mortgage adviser calling people up all day long.. and he basically gets shouted and abused every other call. It's decent (ish) money but the major downside is all the customers calling you every name under the sun. I'd say reading out the same script over and over is one of the positives to the job!
  • :( sounds grim indeed.

Anyone do B2B sales? Is that any 'better'
  • I did this as my first job for a double glazing company.... you're right, it is soul destroying. Most people either hang up or give you abuse. We had a script we had to stick to, and had to bring in 3 sales a week.
Unless you are really desperate for work I'd give it a miss.
There's no way I could do it again. I worked there for 3 years.

I would rather see you unemployed, than have you on my phone.

I was expecting a call to say my Brother had died (last few hours), and I get a call from Staybright Windows. When I was a bit terse with them, they actually had the nerve to call again, and complain about my manners over the phone.
Either way, we get the dirty end of the stick. Damned annoying phone calls, or paying you Job Seekers Allowance.
  • Yep I've done telesales, for 4 weeks during my holidays when I was a student years ago.

I hated every minute of it. It was B2B sales too (cleaning chemicals to haulage, plumbers merchants etc), and for a lot of hassle and grief I got very little actual money in return!

It was commission only too, so if you turned up and didn't make any sales, which quite often was the case, you went home out of pocket after having paid to actually get there.

I personally would never do it again.

I would rather be paying the JSA.

OP, there are of course 2 types of outbound sales, cold calling and follow ups of expressions of interest. Please avoid cold calling. It is a dishonourable trade.

  • I did it for 2 days and then was let go as I wasn't assertive enough. My main problem was with the morals of it rather than the tedium, so if you quite comfortable selling to people anyway then it shouldn't be a problem for you. I wouldn't call it tedious work as I found it so stressful I didn't have a chance to get bored. I think you have to have the right sort of personality to do telesales.
  • telesales is boring and u feel like a robot but most the time it pays well if your good at it you can earn alot of money. i personally hated it because i was rubbish at it but when you do sell something you get a real buzz from it so its always worth giving it a go and if you dont like that side of telesales ask to move to a different station in the job thats what i did.

I worked in telesales for an IT company for over 10 years I earned a lot of money because I didn't "read a script" I built up good relationships with my customers and I was a trusted advisor and almost 20 years on some of them are still my customers. Sales is not for everyone you need personality and charisma not to mention a tough outer skin because some days don't go well but the buzz when you hit your target or close that big one is amazing.
