Used car road tax

Depends where you buy them from. 2nd hand dealer then usually no.
The car may sit for months waiting to be sold and having tax on it will be a waste if money. Also the dealer
cannot cash the tax in like they used to, Unless they add their name to the logbook.
When i was looking for a car and started haggling they usually said you can keep the tax its no use to us.
If its going through the auction it wont make much difference to them.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
We managed to haggle £250 off a 2yo £9000 car at a dealer. When the salesman came back, he said it was a done deal, but then he slapped road tax and first reg onto the final price. Is that usual? Was he pulling a trick?0

Normally no, but sometimes they can be. Of the 5 cars I've bought at a dealer 3 needed taxing straight away, one had 3 weeks tax left on it, and the other still had 8 months to run.0

We just bought a used car for the missus from a dealer - it came with the existing tax disc. I queried this, and was told that it was now easier for them to leave the tax on the car, than the old days of cashing them in, as since the law changed, and all cars must be taxed or on SORN, its less paperwork for them.:TProud to have lived within my means all my life :T0

its not easier as has been pointed out
they cant claim it unless they register the car in their name and this takes time
the failure was the original owner in not removing it and cashing it in at chop time0 -
As a side issue - if you're buying from a trader ( as opposed to private ), the car will usually be untaxed, as previously mentioned. More often than not I've managed to get tax thrown in - do the usual haggling routine, knock the price down as much as possible, when you reckon he's gone as far as he's going, "um" and "ah" for bit. Then say "Tell you what, stick a year's tax on it and you've got a deal". Depending on the car, this could be worth a couple of hundred quid. Obviously it's not going to work all the time, but definitely worth a try :-)0

Fell for that one, Haggled the price down then before they had agreed fully he checked the paperwork to see the exact MOT
date and found a tax disc with 9+ months left, That scuppered my haggling.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
