My Documents Duplication

A month or so ago my PC blue screened and couldn't do anything with it after trying all the usual stuff.
I reinstalled XP SP3 and all updates. I had to recreate the user accounts.
I gave my self a new Name "me +1" thinking a clean profile might help??
Luckily my data was OK and was located in C:/DocSettings/me+1/My Docs/me.
Unfortunately if i simply went through the quick root from the Desktop to My Docs/ me+1 was empty.
I copied me into Desktop/ My Docs. So Desktop/ My Docs/me.
I can see me in both places and the documents are a direct copy, if I update/create in either file path it saves in both me s.
I take it from this that the Desktop/My Docs is providing a short cut.
I haven't done a full backup since (only those critical live items) as I am unsure whether the incremental back up would end up copying a second set of me.
I can map how My Documents should find "me" but is there anything I should be wary of or is there a simple way to resolve it?
I have a full back up copy on a separate hard drive.
TIA

I would manually copy the files from old folder -- and paste into new folder. then: i would delete the old folder. prior to this: yes, manually copy all files onto an external drive. also, if u are using libraries then disable (don't use in this instance ) -- sometimes merely adds to the confusion esp. when it comes to mapping of folders/drives .A new abacus
