Redundancy Advise

Hi All .. Long time viewer hoping for some advise.
My husband has came home today and told me that he is facing redundancy.
He works for a large cooking company but there are only two people up for redundancy they are combining two roles into one.
He is the head chef and the other role is the Kitchen Manager, they are combining these to make Executive Chef ..
He has been told that he needs to re-apply for this new job and that it will also be advertised throughout the whole chain so chances are both of the people up for redundancy could lose their job.
The other person has said she may take voluntary redundancy.. does this mean my husband still needs apply for the new role or considering she is leaving through voluntary solve the need to reduce head count ?
am confused, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

voluntary redundancy
Was that an option offered? whats the package?0 -
He has only worked for them a little over a year so isn't entitled to any redundancy however they have advised they will give him a weeks wage if he fails in getting the new job.
Today was only the initial consultation to advise the situation etc and now he is off work for a week as he is on annual leave next week.
The other person involved mentioned she may take voluntary after the meetings and hasn't actually approached the company about it yet.
If they approached the company with this offer .. her to take voluntary and him to keep his role would it be classed as a counter offer to the situation ?0 -
They can't advertise the job to anyone not a risk unless they are saying that it isn't a suitable alternative vacancy - that would be unfair dismissal.0

is that correct ? if so i will have him challenge it when he goes back to work on thursday... he was meant to be off all week but has to cancel some of his holiday in case he loses his job and will then end up owing them money.0 -
Ah good - I am not going crazy! I did see this just posted elsewhere!0
