Broadband not working in bedroom but works everywhere else!

I've got a real annoying problem in which my internet never works on my acer laptop upstairs in my bedroom. It recognises my sky broadband on the list of wifi sources but doesn't connect. I've even got a 20meter ethernet cable running upstairs and that too doesn't work. But saying that, when I go downstairs the internet works fine with wifi and ethernet cable. I'm in desperate need of advice!

  • It's possible that the signal from the router isn't strong enough in your bedroom. If you had an N router then they have a greater range. Are you saying that the 20m cable works downstairs but not upstairs? That's an odd one! You can buy home network adapters to use cable upstairs if you wish.

when trying the cable, make sure the wifi is turned off on the lappy, some acers are funny about having both wifi and LAN adapters trying to be used simultaneously. Is the LAN port and/or the cable both working okay ??

I did exactly what you said I disabled the wifi and connected the ethernet cable but still no connection. The port and cable work perfectly fine.

I've got the sky modem downstairs which is connected via ethernet cable to a hub upstairs. Then I've got another ethernet cable running from the hub to my laptop in my bedroom. I tested both cables out by going downstairs and connecting them directly to the modem. I don't know what else to do....

I might have to try the home plug ethernet adapters which the person recommended in this thread! Only thing is that they cost quite a bit.

Before going down that route I think some more diagnostics are required. If the laptop works fine downstairs both hard wired and wireless then the problem is elsewhere.

Unless your house is built of heavy stone walls, metal framework or the room is aligned such that the signal has to pass through the length of several walls I would surprised if you can't get at least an intermitent wireless signal.

    Does it work anywhere upstairs?

Is it the way the upstairs "hub" (can you clarify what this is exactly) is set up?

I had a wireless issue in one of my bedrooms where it would have weak signal and loose it using a "G" set up. Not helped when a neighbour took up a BT Hub that swamped me. (Don't you just love the way BT take up the airwaves just so they can offer hotspots to their customers.)

I upgraded to an "N" set up and resolved. I believe my issue was the wall alignment in relation to the transmitter, which I couldn't move. The other rooms were OK.

I did look at the plug in distributors but the cost put me off and the need to be hard wired.

  • Hi,

I think I understand your configuration, what I would suggest is that you unplug the connection from your modem -> hub and plug your laptop in using that same cable to the modem. (I.e. remove the cable from hub and plug in laptop). This will sugest weather or not the hub and or cable are issues. Also when plugged in please reboot your PC / laptop and try. The reboot is just the quickest / easiest way for us to clear out certain settings.
If it doesn't work then please can you list the name and model of your hub. Do you really mean a hub or a switch?... Also the model of laptop can be useful.
