£30 is very cheap, my Daughter moved into halls yesterday and is paying £116/week before she feeds herself and buys books and transport to Uni which is 10 miles away.

My son is moving to Uni in the next ten days or so. His is about £120 pw excluding food, but including internet etc.

We worked out travelling costs etc and time to travel and it is just not viable for him to stay at home ( unfortunately.) Still I will have three at home but will miss him like crazy :o

He would have had to pay board if he stayed with us though, I would have done it as cheaply as possible for him though, but £30 is cheap.

  • I am in the same situation, daughter got grades needed to get course she wanted in local uni. If I mention she should pay anything out of the approx £100 a week grant/loan she gets as I am a carer on IS, she has a hissy fit, backed up by Daddy (ex hubby) who can do no wrong, but still walks into my house after divorced 18 months.

It is actually hard to cope at this time. I should be enjoying being a first time grandma last Tuesday, but instead am worrying about how to look after my parents, and live off CA and IS.

My dad has dementia as a result of a stroke and for the first time today did not know my name.

Tell her she pays up or she gets other accommodation. You are not responsible for her anymore. Cheeky little mare! My dd would be out on her ear if she behaved like that.
Change your locks so your ex can't enter your home as he pleases.

  • OP, I'd ask for at least the £77 - thats a fair reflection of the cost of living (if you're a student in a cheap place! I'd just about manage on £77 a week for rent, food and bills). If she gets all the loans and grants, she should be able to afford that and still have enough to pay for study costs.

Samsaragirl - I second the person who said to tell her to move out! Or at least stop feeding her. If she's at university, she should be old enough to fend for herself, and she has enough money to do so. If you let people get away with it, they'll carry on getting away with it...
  • in 1996 i paid my parents £80 per week while at uni. this was the same cost as halls as they wanted to teach me the value of money. (it worked)

My daughter is starting Uni later this month.

My partner and I have very little money coming in, he works full time and because I have 5 daughters I can't find work to fit around them.

My daughter is getting the maximum help in the way of Maintenance Loan and Grant.

My Child Tax Credit money is dropping and our household income will drop by £77 a week, am I justified in asking my daughter for £30 a week??

She has her own room, I do all her washing and ironing, and cook for the whole family most nights!!

Budgeting works both ways! You knew that your income would drop by £77 a week and should have budgeted for that in case she got a uni place miles from home.

It would be fair to work out what exactly extra it costs you to have her living at home and charge about that.

I totally agree. So many parents rely on state benefits to have children then moan when the benefits are no longer payable.

Its not costing you any extra in rent/mortgage (unless you would truly would have downsized if your child lived in uni halls) so realistcally its a little for utilities and food.

Personally, i'd be very grateful if DS decided to stay home whilst at uni as perhaps he wouldnt have to take out as much in loans and leave uni heavily in debt.
