Grant overpayment & SLC repayment

OH started a PGCE last year (secondary science), and received a grant for the fees through the SLC.

He was "advised" to withdraw from the course following his second placement (just before Easter) because he didn't have the required classroom management skills. He agreed - he is primarily a biochemical medical researcher who (post-recession) was struggling to find a research position and so thought about entering the teaching profession.

His withdrawal came too late to advise SLC before they paid his final term's proportion of the grant.

He has now received a letter (the first one) saying that "...after several attempts to contact you in regards to your overpayment of student grant, £1,576 remains outstanding." And then goes on to say that unless we pay by x date, they'll set the dogs on us (well, not exactly, but you get me :rotfl:)

He's not in employment at the moment (he is currently being my carer and so is only getting Carer's Allowance) and in September has been accepted onto another post-grad course (more related to his original qualifications and area of interest). He does have some savings but would prefer not to pay these all over.

Obviousy, he is willing to repay this money, but we were wondering whether it was possible to defer this until he's earning (like his undergraduate loan is), or whether anyone has any idea whether the SLC will accept low repayments while he's still studying.
We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

What happened to the grant payment? If he withdrew before it was paid then surely he knew he wasn't entitled to it and kept it to one side so he could pay it back?

Grant overpayments are usually repayable immediately though it may be possible to come to an agreement with the SLC (not sure how likely this will be if he has savings he can use).

He needs to contact the SLC and discuss repayment options.

Student finance are tbh quite reasonable under these circumstances. I've received an overpayment before and a payment of £5 a month towards it should keep them happy.
