Should I use my new surname or maiden name?

I am going to apply for a credit card and wanted to askyou advice.

I got married less than 2 weeks ago. I haven't changed my name with the bank yet as had no chance to get there. My passport (I am a foreign national) is being changed at the moment, so all IDs I have are in my maiden name. I informed my workplace about my name change and our electricity supplier about the name change and these have been done now.

The question is should I apply for a new credit card with my maiden name or can I do it in my married name? Would it cause any problem?

    Hi All,

Don't they usually have a 'Have you been known by any other names in the last 5 years?' box on the application form, which if you filled in correctly would show that you are the same person as your maiden name and tie your credit card (and credit file?) to your new name.

    Cheers

I was not thinking to tell any lies! I just don't know how would it work with all the credit scoring and so on. I don't want to be refused the credit card just because the credit card company haven't found any record of me by new surname.

  • The credit report won't show your name change until you change your name with the accounts you already have so you'd probably be declined to be honest.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
When I got married, I ran my own business and worked out that I would have to notify 85 different agencies about my change of status/name.

Just as well I didn't bother as the marriage only lasted 20 months and I doubt I would have got round to changing my name with all these agencies before I would have decided to change it back again!!! :rotfl: :rotfl:
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

All you do is enclose a copy of the marriage certificate with your documents and they will look up both names.

    it's quite easy.
apply using you new married name, but make sure the application does contain details of your previous name.
when the lender searches they should put both names in, creating an alias on the system, which will allow them to see all the history against your maiden name.

other wise, as has already been said, I would expect you will be declined, as there is no history at all against your new name.
Karma is a wonderful thing. ;)
