Working Tax Credit Run on

When I stopped working I applied for JSA. I also called the tax credits office to let them know I was not working. I was not in receipt of any WTC as I was considered a high earner and my Child tax credit had also stopped due to a previous over payment. When I called them they told me I was eligible for the WTC run on. I disputed this as I have never ever qualified for WTC and had only previously been able to get £30 a week in Child Tax Credit. They insisted this was correct and paid me almost £1000!!!!
When my renewal was due and the recalculated this, I have now been told that I have to pay back this money??
Even though I told them I was never eligible and they insisted that I was, do I really have to pay this money back??
Doesnt really seem fair.

In the world of Tax credits "fair" does not come into it, you need to start the appeal process ASAP, try and get dates etc so that as part ot the appeal you can ask for a CD recording of your call to help with your version of events. Once the appeal starts the overpayment will be put on hold, at present it can take 3 - 12 months to get a decision, even if the first appeal fails keep going untill you have exhausted all attempts. Be prepared though you may have to give the money back. Other people may say that as you were so adament you were right you should have put the money in a savings account for this very scenerio.
Good luck

When you end employment you will automatically be told about the 4 week run on even if you hadn't been getting it due to income. Usually if you haven't been getting it due to income, you would receive a run on amount if you gave over a revised etimate of your current year income. It's quite a common reason for overpayments because some people give over their p45 figure and don't take into account what will happen in he rest of the tax year. Is this what happened with you perhaps?0
