So we're all supposed to spend our lives living in fear of some sort of impending apocalypse?

Anyone want to put forward specifics of what exactly they think is going to happen and what (if anything) individuals can do to prepare for it?

If the answer to the latter is 'nothing', what's the point of being stressed about it? Unless you hope to bring on an early heart attack and avoid the situation.

It's a bit (well, quite a lot) "management b*****ks" but ever heard of the circle of influence/circle of concern:
    http://www.choosingchange.org.uk/pdfs/circle_of_influence.pdf

Essentially a long-winded way of saying "worry about the things you can actually change". Anything else is wasted energy.

Think there is a lot of confusion on this thread between two things.

    Unavoidable and avoidable.

We can't avoid weather systems, natural disasters such as earthquakes and flooding etc.

But we can avoid problems such as Greece, Banks doing what they did etc.

Afterall, one is completely out of our control.

The others, are fully under our control, and it is only human decisions, and greed, which puts us in the situations we are in.

There's also confusion about the distinction between "our control" at the macro level (governments, companies) and "our control" on a personal level.

We can discuss till we're blue in the face what the powers that be should do (it's what keeps most students busy for three years). If it's at the point where you feel genuinely stressed by it there are two options:

    1) Get into local politics, work your way up and campaign for those changes.

    2) Accept that you don't control the world (marginal influence from choosing which party to vote for) and look after your own affairs based on your world view.

Most discussion on here is at the macro level but some posts on this thread have referred to individuals being unprepared. My question was, what exactly do these posters think is going to happen (in terms of the impact on individuals) and what can/should people do to prepare in their view?

There's a difference between fully under our control as human kind as a whole, as opposed to a bunch of disparate individuals on a messageboard who really have no control whatsoever over these things (unless one of you is the head of the ECB or something?).

And theres a difference between an apocolypse and the current problems laid out in the OP, which was my point.

Option 3) is to realise that we can work and live in other places than the UK. This is especially true if you are young, well educated, and with fewer ties.

HOWEVER it will take some time for us to reach those dark days. For now the average house price in the UK is £228,024, the FTSE 100 is trading at 5,292, the average wage is £26,000 and it's really not as bad as the pessimists think it is.

I had to check I thought the Ftse had made a recovery, not so icon9.gif still way below 5200.
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher

two bad days on the markets.

Everyone is back from holidays now, could see some major activity as people profit from buying low, and pile in!
