  • Local Authority: City of York Council
    Previous Banding: C
    Rebanded to: B
Rebate: £560, due to arrive sometime in the next 7 days.

Thanks :money: , after following your advice, I found that the neighbours' houses were in a lower council tax band. The only difference between my house and the neighbours' is officially my house (it is on the street corner) is addressed on a different street, despite being part of the same housing estate/build. The city of York, agree and have rebanded my house to the same as my neighbours.
    Thank you for your advice
  • Following my success with a mortgage exit fee refund, I decided to challenge the council tax banding for my house. Following Martin's simple instructions, I discovered that most of the houses in the street were band C and my house, together with 5 or 6 others, was band D. So I e mailed the council offices, as directed by Martin and a couple of months later I received a letter to say my band was being reduced to band C and a refund supplied to be backdated to when I bought the house! Thanks to you Martin, I have nearly a year free from council tax payment.
Thnak you so much. You are a star!

Please see my previous post on page 19. I have successfully received interest on my council tax refund.

    All the best.

Please see my previous post on page 19 about claiming the interest back. I have been successful.

    All the best.

The Chief Executive's Office assessed my case and finally agrees that a "mistake" was made and then compensated me with £563 interest. It is worth persueing. Don't give up. My post is on page 19.

    All the best.

PS. I think Martin should do an article about reclaiming the interest. It is certainly worthwhile.
  • Hi
I too claimed back £285.52 in interest on top of my £2001 rebate.
See my post on page 22.
Many thanks to Keith1956 as I followed his advice of writing to the Customer Service Manager at the VOA. It was surprisingly simple, one short letter, a couple of letters from VOA that were discouraging which I ignored, then a letter a few weeks later with a cheque.
Good luck and don't give up - it is your money.
  • hi there not success story yet but i challenged my banding in november and even allthough i have my title deeds stating my house price was lower than what the assesors have they tell me i wont get a response till 2008 i am paying more c/t than any of my neighbours and we should all be paying less as my title deeds show there was only one house in my street sold in 1991 is there any legal way i can get them to speed this up
  • Hi Caterham

I'm glad my advice was helpful. Your experience with the Cheif Executive's Office mirrored mine.

I hope this encourages more people to reclaim the interest owed to them.

    All the best.

  • Macclesfield Borough Council
    Previous Banding F
    New Banding E
    Refund £3,016.54
    Saving this year £298.93

How easy was that!! Just one phone call and one letter (based on Martin's guidelines) and hey presto! I had assumed that similar properties in my area were all on the same banding, but we weren't. I was in the minority.

The refund is dated back to April 1993. There were times when we could have done with receiving ANY reduction, and now we have one lump sum. Great!

Keep up the good work Martin!
  • Thank you so much! My house was originally banded as an E; after contacting the VOA, using all the tips and processes your site provided, it has been reduced to a band D. In total I have received £1682.23 refund, this is inclusive of this years' charge, so nothing to pay for the rest of the year!
    Once again, thank you.
