Local Borough Council: Wyre Borough Council
Council Tax band Before: D
Council Tax Band After: C
Amount refunded: £1758
Annual Savings going forward: £165
Thanks to Martin's tip and detailed guide we got a whopping £1758 which covered 16 years! I had always thought we were in the wrong band and had phoned the local borough council in previous years and was told there was nothing I could do about it. When I retired I had a little more time to look into it and followed Martin's guide. Have to say the refund came at just the right time for us so thanks Martin, Top Tip!

Local Borough Council: North Somerset
Council Tax Band Before: G
Council Tax Band After: F
Amount refunded: £3600
Annual saving going forward: £300
Took your advice, and after two letters to the local Valuation Office and a time scale of two months came a confirmation of agreement that we should be in the band F and not G, the rebate was paid within one month of the local council receiving the information from the Valuation Office. Your information on the site was invaluable.
Many thanks once again

I know it may not be valid but just found out that the property I was living in before I moved out in 2007 I was paying the wrong band tax B instead of A as both neighbours were on A. Would I have the right to complain to the VOA and Council with regards to this and seek a rebate as this type of information was not available to me before this forum in 2007 and I lived there from 1983 and the tax came in to force in 1993 and I was never informed that I could challenge the banding.
Has anybody tried this or is it a waste of time, it would mean that the Council have been taking overpayments from people for many years due to misrepresented information provided by the VOA.

Local Borough Council: South Somerset
Council Tax Band Before: G
Council Tax Band After: E
Amount refunded: £5000 approx!!!!!
Annual saving going forward: bit more complicated...
We had been on tax code G from 1993 until 2008 - following appeal it went down to an E.
However as we had built an annexe in 1997 that now has band A and the cottage band F - from 2008. (The cottage went back UP to F because of the rules on annexes that say they also get included on the main house calculation of spce/rooms etc
They could only charge for the annexe from 2008 as it was their mistake. But the cottage reduction was fully backdated to 1993.
Result was approx £5k refund but net tax will be higher going forward - quite correctly due to annexe.
many thanks for the advice on this website!0 -
I read in my local council's newsletter that you could get reduction in council tax if you have a room specifically required for a person with a disability and forwarded to my parents who live in a different local authority. They had put in a downstairs toilet & shower room for my diabled father so they made appropriate enquiries, had a visit from the council, and got a reduction of one tax band backdated to when the shower room was installed. They didn't get a refund as such, instead the reduction was offset against this year's revised bill. Apparently the banding doesn't change because the relief is dependent on a disabled person living in the house - but a result nevertheless!0

I got re banding for the houses on my road that were like mine. Everyone got about £1200 rebate except me... who got £100 because I had only been living here a year. (The chap I bought the house from and had left it really dirty, got the rest of it)
I told all the other people on the road what I had done for them and I didn't even get a bunch of flowers or a box of chocolates0 -
Hi all,
I have recently challenged my CTB, after the initial conversation I had with a very helpful chap at the VOB who informed me that 'I could have a very good case here' I thought I was on to a sure fire winner!
Sadly I went through the process and was contacted roughly two months later by letter, I was informed that the valuations officer had taken a look at my house and decided that I was indeed in the right council tax band and that I had no recourse for appeal as her decision was full and final. Not sure if this is important but we had no visit from them.
Sorry I'm getting ahead of myself here,
I live in a three bedroom detached house, I have one bathroom and 1 additional downstairs toilet. I have land with my house but we are not talking anything more than a big garden!
I live on a mixed street of semi detached houses and around 8 other detached properties. My neighbour has exactly the same number bedrooms and toilets as me with roughly the same sized garden. The only difference is that my house is slightly bigger.
My council tax banding is a D and my neighbours is a B, the next house is a semi and that is an A.
One thing that was mentioned in the letter is that she intends to look into 'possibly' raising the banding of other houses in the area.
So money saving experts - Any ideas on my next step??
Do I just accept it or could there be something more I can gain from this??0 -

As you are no longer the occupier you have no right to ask VOA to check your band. However you could suggest to the present occupier that they ask VOA to check the band.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
