  • Still going strong at 180K miles 2nd wheel bearing gone, this time on O/S. Never had a car this long before. Would seriously recommend it to anyone!!:beer:

    There's plenty about, so you can be picky.

    They're good solid cars, but a bit like Passats, they have a reputation for never breaking down, so people don't bother looking after them. Have a good read through the service history, find one that looks like it's been looked after rather than a scruffy old barge with a knackered interior and cracked dumpers.

    Pick of the bunch is always going to be the TDI, but make sure it's been serviced regularly.

    Bigger petrol engine's aren't any worse on fuel than the smaller ones. They can be better on the motorway.

    I'm not saying the 1.8T's a bad engine, but it does have more bits that go wrong. The main problem is weak oil pumps (VAG oil pumps aren't the best) leading to knackered turbos.
    Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
    Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?
