cleaning white sink

I have an old sink in my kitchen that is white and a bit bobbly in texture - its a nightmare to clean, anyone any tips that will bring it up really well?

  • We have had a white sink which sounds similar for the last 17 years. I hate it! Can't wait to rip the whole kitchen out in the next few months (as well as the white worktops.).

Hubby fills the sink (and draining board) with cheap bleach and water overnight. This has worked well for us.

Just come back from holiday though and found son had put tyres in the sink (don't ask!!) and it took several nights to turn the sink back to white.

  • ...white spirit usually brings off grime really well.

It does smell a bit, but if you wash it over with washing up liquid afterwards that takes the nasty smell away. Also works well on Permanent Marker and those nasty sticky marks left by sellotape (other tapes are available) :)

Hope there aren't any Aussies reading this. :D

  • The sideboard of our sink is easily wiped down with washing up liquid and a bit of elbow grease. However, the actual bottom of the sink is scratched and scarred (was like this when I moved in) so it seems to really hang on to dirt and stains. Doesn't help that OH is notorious for emptying teapot/coffee pot into the sink and often leaves teabags/coffee grinds in it :doh:So I tend to wash down the edges of the sink with washing up liquid to remove stains/tea splatter, wash the bottom as well as I can with a bit of elbow grease, and then fill the sink with about an inch of cold water and a capful of bleach to take off any stains I can't shift. Works a treat! :D

Can't wait until we can justify the cost of a new sink and cupboards, though! The lower cupboards are fine, but whoever fitted the upper ones has made a real hash of them, and only one is actually level! :rotfl:

I'll be trying this, thanks. :) My kitchen sink is brown!

Same as you, the rest cleans up ok with a scrub and some washing-up liquid but the tea stains at the bottom of the sink are really stubborn.

It sounds like an 'Asterite' Sink. I have one too and bleach does it for me - fill up the sink with cold watera nd add bleach and leave for a few hours. Needs doing a couple of times a week though, especially if you still use a teapot and throw the leftover tea down the sink.

I find my white bath and sink comes up well if I soak with a mixture of bleach and bio soap powder. I tend to use hot water to allow the bio powder to dissolve and then leave as long as possible to remove stains/grease etc.
  • In between bleaches nail varnish remover sometimes works really well on a scourer-not on plastic sinks tho!

I had a new bathroom put in which is made by vitra.

I thought I had knackered the sink one day, by shaving. I swilled the razor blade out in the water in the sink and when I emptied it , I had scratches and marks all over the bottom. I rang the guy who fitted it for me and he just said, rub a little T CUT on a cloth over the marks.

It worked great. Any stubborn marks on the sink now get a little T CUT on them and it brings them up new.
