Solicitors - Can they do a CRB check?

I know that the NHS and other voluntary organisations can request a CRB check. But I wonder, can Solicitors? ie. if you go for a job as a Legal Secretary?

Any employer can do a check. It's one you have to pay for.

  • Is that a crb check Alter ego? Do you mean that any employer can do a CRB check? I thought only NHS and those who are registered as working with vulnerable adults etc. etc. could do a CRB.

All legal staff (and a lot of others) must be CRB checked - but not all employers (in fact the majority of them) can make CRB checks. A legal secretary must be CRB checked. Anyone - absolutely anyone with potential access to our files / clients - and that includes the cleaners! - are eCRB checked.
  • One law firm I worked for CRB checked me as part of a whole raft of checks.

The direct gov website states that any employer can ask for a CRB check if one is required.

Posts with the NHS working with vulnerable adults etc etc as you put it, require an enhanced check. The scope for a basic check is much wider than this

And you believe everything the government tell you?

Only certain occupations/sectors/types of employers can apply for CRB checks.

And by the way - no, it doesn't. It says "If the job needs a criminal record check any employer can ask for one. However, only organisations registered with the CRB can submit applications for criminal records checks." There are strict rules about which employers can or must apply for these checks.
  • No, most jobs do not need a criminal record check and so the employer is not registered with CRB and does not have the right to ask for a CRB Check, Basic or Enhanced.

Where can we find which employers can apply please?

  • Why though, if the job requires that level of checks, the employer will be registered.
