Natwest Step Cash Changes

As I'm sure most of you know, Natwest are stopping their step account holders withdrawing cash from non RBS group cashpoints.

Have any step account holders actually heard from NW about it? I've had nothing whatsoever....

Its an annoyance to me as I have always used it as my main bank account, only using the current for cheques.

I have heard that RBS Key account (rbs equiv account) have already had their cash machine access restricted.

In that case you need be little affected. Carry on using it for your standing order and direct debit banking. Significantly reducing the scope for inadvertant charging. Use your "current account" debit card for cash withdrawals from any Link ATM.

st clair does the migration downwards from step to basic mean a new debit card will be issued to us as well or will we still be able to use our existing cards but only in rbs/natwest atm's?

Well, I've definitely not received anything

I can't remember, are you currently, or formerly in the employ of NW?

And its still an inconvenience because I now have to carry round another card and remember another pin number and keep my funds divided between accounts. Not the end of the world I know but it doesn't really suit me.

Yeah 8 years service and still going strong. The letters and emails are being sent out at the moment. This will involve you getting a new card, there are other threads within mse from customers who have already received the letter/email.

Change the pin numbers to be the same on both cards.

There you go. Life is easy again ;) .

I have seen mitigations mentioned that address that concern. Choose 1 of the 4 PIN numbers to be "unique" (which one only you know) and take a selection of numbers of the card 16 digits, typically a group of 4 (which only you know). Combine them in a way (which only you know) into the "unique" digit of the PIN.

Because the process is the same for all cards it is easy to remember the process but (hopefully) the process delivers a unique digit. Problem mitigated.

Ever thought of covering the keypad when entering your pin?

I always do. I work in the card industry so I'm always very concious about taking as many steps as possible to stop fraud against me & if it does happen to minimise it....
