Declined by NatWest?

I recently applied for one of NatWests basic accounts that used to be known as the step account, however they have declined me. I know my credit score is really bad so this is why I went for a basic account that provided no credit facilities nor changes to accrue more debt.
I'm not too sure what to do know as I thought this was a basic account that anyone could pass for as long as they met the ID and residency criteria? I really wanted this account as they provided a visa debit card with it so bills, shopping etc could be paid for online or just over the counter instead of having to use cash all the time.
Has anyone else been declined a basic account? If so did you ever find out the reason? Who else could I try?
Thanks

Did you owe money to RBS ?
You could try for a co-op cashminder account, apply over the phone. It comes with a visa debit card also.0 -

That is a surprise as there is a presumption of acceptance, then the need to prove ID. The main grounds for being declined are those given in the table, with the addition of an IVA.

Any of these apply? If not that is worry as it suggests Natwest have information that they do. Is a misunderstading in the application process possible?0 -
I called NatWest this evening to ask them what the reasoning for this was, and they have advised me that the 'Silver Select' account is not a basic bank account, even though the woman on the phone the other day said it was an that the account still had credit restrictions - she then transferred me through to someone to make a new application for just the 'Basic' account. However he then said it came up on his screen that I was eligible for the 'Basic' or 'Silver Select'? I have just gone for the bare basics though, although I'm not holding my breath, everyone I seem to speak to at NatWest give me a different story as to whats what with their policies and accounts.

Maybe you are better off with the Basic?0 -
I take it you realise that 'Silver Select' is a packaged account with a monthly fee?
Maybe you are better off with the Basic?
Yeah - I have just gone for the basic account thats free of charge. The £8 a month one isn't really worth it for what I need, and to be fair that £8 a month could go to a creditor and help kill the debtsIf you are not very careful, your possessions will possess you!

You do know that the basic one only has a card that can be used in a Natwest/RBS cash machine now i hope. You'd be better off with the co-op cashminder account0
