Kumon or private tutor?

Looking to get extra Maths help for daughter.

Kumon was mentioned to me by a teacher at school, in conversation.

Costs are £55 per month. I'm assuming a tutor would be similarly priced (£15 a week at a guess?)

Not sure which route to go down.

Any thoughts?

  • How old is she?

    £20-£25 an hour for tutoring.

What about getting the books in whsmiths or wherever and DIY? They come with answers and gold stars.

    Hi

We paid for a tutor for my eldest son when we found that he was struggling. The tutor taught him alongside what he was learning at school to make sure he understood and then built on it (if this makes sense) and made sure he was prepared for his GCSEs and that there were no gaps that he had missed or didn't understand.

    I hope this helps

I have no experience of Kumon, but I hired a tutor this year for DS for literacy. It cost me £15 an hour and his problems were sorted within 4 x 1 hr (weekly) lessons, though I paid for an additional hour. DS does pick things up quickly though.

I am pretty sure when I told my friend about it she found on-line tutors advertising their business but I can't remember the web page, try googling 'finding a tutor' and then you put in your postcode to find people within your area.

I adored DS's tutor, someone with lots of experience, she came with worksheets for him and the 1st thing she said was 'we are going to do some fun things as the last thing you want after a school-day is for your mum to invite a stranger into your house who will bore you'.

She 11. Only just started secondary school.

My aunt knows a retired school teacher who still tutors kids in this area, was considering her until the Kumon thing was mentioned. Don't actually know how much she would charge just mentioned £15 as I knew that's what Spendless had paid so used that as a ballpark figure.

  • I did a bit of Maths tutoring over the summer with a girl that needed a bit of extra help with her understanding. It may depend on whether your daughter works better in a one-to-one or group scenario, and whether it's just a bit of extra understanding she needs or more than that. I charged £10-£12 an hour which is quite cheap, but I've only recently qualified and just wanted it as something to keep my mind and skills active whilst on maternity leave. £55 a month for Kumon is comparable I guess, but obv involves a different way of doing things.

Maybe ask her and see what she would prefer? Or as someone else mentioned, find some games and worksheets online to start with to see if that helps first before you start spending too much.

I have been looking at the options for my DD. Instead I have chosen a tutoring group that will cost me £7phr (2hrs a week group of 6) but they cover Maths/English/11+ stuff. I chose a group over a private tutor as L has a real tendency to daydream quite liter... ooo, a straight line.... ary. (That sort of thing! LOL!) plus I felt that Kumon was too regimented/money focused (didn't like the guy doing it) and in a small group the kids are more likely to learn from each other as well.

Tutors in this area are anything from £15 - £35phr across the board from Yr1 right up to Uni level and almost any subject you can think of. (And private music lessons are far cheaper than the cost my school/local council can offer!)

L's group will be used in conjunction with workbooks after school that are of my chosing.

There is also an online maths tutor - https://www.brightsparkeducation.com/ I haven't used them yet but 2 of my friends have raved about them. Enter the comp and register interest - you wont win (Probably) but you are likely to automatically get a 20% discount code.

This looks the same or similar to the website my friend looked at.

ETA- Please someone tell me if it comes up with a postcode already in it, cos it's mine and understandably I don't want it on the open net! If so, I'll delete this post as soon as aliasojo tells me she's made a note of it if she's interested.

Nope - no postcode in it! Just the blank fill in spots to find what you want.
