Ill health retirement advice needed.

My partner may soon have to take ill health retirement from his job and can expect a settlement of approx £17,000
At the moment we get Child tax credit and child benefit for 1 child and my partner recieves DLA at the highest rate with the lower rate care component (I think, it works out at £70 p/w approx), he also recieves £40 approx in tax credits because of his disability.
I do not work and whilst I would be willing to work if my partner were to retire I think this wont be possible as he will need me at home as his carer, anyways what I need advice about is where do we start with finding out what we're entitled to benefit-wise as I assume the tax credits will end when he leaves his job.
Any help or advice or just general direction pointing will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Evenstarr.

    I was medically retired in October 2007, aged 37 at the time with a wife and 3 children (now 4 kids) to support, so I know how stressful it is to go through and the uncertainty of finances etc.

    I found the Citizen's Advice Bureau to be fantastic, so much so that now I have trained as a volunteer generalist advisor with them. You should also contact your and your partner's Unions if you are a member of one they will be able to offer help and advice. Does your partner's work have a welfare department/welfare officer if s talk to them as well.

    Go to the CAB website http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ so you can find your nearest one, give them a call and make an appointment or see if your local CAB office has drop in days and just pop in. Tell them absolutely everything, ask for a benefits check and an Income and Expenditure check too, especially if you have any debts. They'll be help you through the application process for things like Employment and Support Allowance and suchlike

    If you mean your partner gets high rate mobility and low rate care you will not be able to be his offical carer and claim carers allowance, you need middle/high rate care to do that, has your husbands condition worsened since he was awarded DLA?

    If it has you could apply for a supersession of his award (if thats the reason he is retireing now) but be aware that could cause they would look at his whole award and it could mean his award is changed, stays the same or he could lose his award.

    I can't understand your dilemma because if he is working now and is still capable of doing so, surely you wont need to be his full time carer if he retires.
    He can presumably dress himself, physically get to work, do the work and get home.

    I cant see any reason why you couldnt work to be honest, even if its just part time.
    make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
    and we will never, ever return.

    I Retired on Ill Health Grounds last year and got a small Ill Health Pension.

    Your OH Tax Credit will end when he stops work (but you'll have to advise them, that he's stopped working or they'll keep paying it and you'll then have to repay them), the day after I finished I put in a claim for ESA (which I got).

    If he's had to stop work, you should look into seeing if he's entitle to Mid or High Care or his DLA and if he gets that then look into Cares Allowance.

    Other than that, like other have said speak to CAB.
