Soo angry - Amex just screwed me...

I called them to ask them to lower my interest rate which they refused. Then they offered to increase my limit, to which I said why not.

I know this was a huge mistake… anyway. They asked me to send them proof of income, which I did and they received it.

Today I have received a letter in the post saying that they cant increase my credit limit (!!!) because the credit check (!!!!!) was not satisfactory.

I almost had a heart attack… credit check? Of course its not satisfactory, and they should NOT HAVE MADE a credit check! I am not desperate for the limit increase and I made it clear that I don’t want any credit checks to be made! Now these idiots just f***ed up my waiting time as I will have to wait ANOTHER 6 months now for me to be able to apply for anything because of this silly and useless footprint on my credit report… I can't beliueve this.

What can I do? Please if you have any suggestions let me know… thanks

  • When you have so much on credit cards to start with why do you want to apply for yet more?

As you said, you didn't want amex to increase your limit in the first place.
  • lesson learnt do not increase your limit.

I think they unwittingly did you a favour. You might not think it right now but I've fell into this trap before. Have a cup of tea and relax.

  • I think it'd probably for the best TBH. Better to have a footprint in your record than and extra x amount of debt.

  • well the reason I want to apply for more cards so that I can transfer my balance to a 0% card!

and I did not WANT to increase the limit, they offered and I was like, why not. I am not unhappy about the fact they declined, at all! I am unhappy about the credit check.. and I specified that they should not do one

If you have reduced your debt by 490 quid since mov surely by your figures this is off your Amex so why would you want to increase your limit. Why would you say 'why not' and not 'no' if you really are aware of your finances? Surely if you wanted to apply for another card you wouldnt want even more credit. Maybe try to clear your smaller balances like Capital One and closing your account but remember this could take months to apprear on your credit file. Concentrate on your debts foremost and then when you've less available credit you may get a 0% card or a low interest life of balance card(maybe more suitable in your case).

edited to add: looking at interest rates you need to clear that capital one first anyway!

  • Well it is clear for me that I made a mistake by saying yes, but I thought (thats what that silly thing on the phone implied) that this will happen automatically and not with a credit check...

yeah you're right i will pay the capital one off first - i already cut it into pieces so i dont spend on it....
