Microchip advice please

Right i need abit of advice please, i rehomed Kitty over 12 months ago now from an ad on preloved, she was meant to be one of 2 but they never got back to us about the other cat.

When enquirying about the cats they stated they had both been 'done' and chipped, however they never gave us any paperwork regarding any of this.

We are obviously looking into getting her jabs for this year ( we were told she was all up to date) but we are worried that if or when they scan her and she is chipped (we are not 100% convinced) that they might take her off us?

How do we go about getting her checked and if she is chipped getting the details changed? I have no contact details for the old owners as their number was changed a long while back now. Is there a risk she will be taken from us? I couldnt bear it if she was :(
sorry if the questions are abit daft. But we obviously have no proof that she was given to us freely etc.

You know I had a similar problem with the 2 cats that my ex pretty much dumped on me not long ago.

When I spoke to the vets, they said no probs they can scan them and let me know the chip numbers so to help me sort this out with Petlog.

But Petlog wuld not talk to me as they said the owner had to ask for change of details on the microchip.

Took me ages to get my ex to contact Petlog and pay (15 each microchip - just to change details - daytime robbery if you ask me) to have them signed over to me.

Is the vet someone you have used in the past?

I am really sorry can not advice, I kow charities can change chip details when they have pets handed in to them - really not sure what an individula can do :(

Thanks for the advice, i'm scared to risk it just incase, as theres no possible way i can contact the old owners, but i dont want her to be chipless either because the kids round here get hold of her and take her collar off and throw it down the drain, so annoying sometimes i wish she would scratch them but shes so soft she goes running up to them for fuss :( I'm at a loss as what is best to do.

You said you had the cat for 12 months and that the cat goes out - in those 12 months you never had the cat at the vets? For vaccinations for example?

If kids bother the cat, I would keep the cat in....or go out with the cat. Sorry but why would kids take the cat's collar off and throw it away? Some nasty kids you got around there...

My cats go out and everyone around here knows them and fusses about them but I still keep an eye on my "babies" when they are out.

Hope you get the chiop situation sorted.

Its been just over 12 months and was told she had, already had her jabs, we rang the vets the day we got her and they said if she'd already had them then they wouldnt give them again, but obviously now we need to take her to get jabs, which is why i am more stressy about the chip predicament. I've been very lucky she doesnt go far from her food or my black carpet.
Unfortunately the kids that are taking her collar off have only just moved in, OH has had a few words with the kids parents but we just get 'kids will be kids' and they dont like it when we state our children arent like that.
I will ring vets tomorrow i think and ask a few questions and book her in for her jabs.

    Thanks for the advice

Pity you did not take her for boosters within the 12 months, would be much cheaper than having to do the full course of vaccinations now.

But no vet would give just boosters if you did nto have the original vaccinations certificate anyway.

They may have been lying about the vaccinations - if they never gave you the vaccination books and microchip details (cat may not be microchipped)

Is it a male or female? Perhaps it is not neutered even? With female cats it is difficult to tell if they have been done or not..

Are you in London by any chance?

If you are, perhaps Celia Hammond could help/advice re microchips?

This is CH in Canning Town (London) but they have branches in other places too, perhaps they could help you re microchip - they are very much cat people

When Daisy was chipped, the vets got my address wrong & my mobile number,so when they sent her paperwork to me,it was returned as the address was wrong.
Petlog wanted £5.00 from me to correct someone else's mistake,a mistake I wasn't aware of until I enquired about her paperwork.

well i bit the bullet and took her in to get checked etc they scanned her with 2 scanners and nothing no chip at all, so now she is chipped and vaccinated. Cost me £35.50 all in with chipping and vaccinations and her second lot is free, so good deal i think.

She is officially our cat the relief is immense :j

Shes sulking atm but OH is the best thing since sliced bread coz he fussed her and gave her treats when she got home, i'm the evil witch that took her in and let someone hurt her, typical really :p

    Thanks for the advice

    Great news.....:)

No idea why people lie... so the cat was not neutered either then?

Vet thinks she is as she is an 'outdoor cat' and would almost certainly have gotten pregnant by now. She's definitely not pregnant now he checked her all over, tho she did grumble when he put the chip in, mind you i would have the size of that needle. OUCH!
