Getting out of BT contract

When BT put their prices up, I've heard there's a ten day window when you become out of contract and are free to switch suppliers without penalty.

Does anyone know when this 10 day window will be?
BT's prices go up in December.

    How to escape your contract
There is no point trying to escape penalty-free now as BT says it won't cancel your contract penalty-free until you are officially notified of the price rises. As soon as that happens, call BT to tell it you want to leave. This must be within 10 days of notification. Here's how BT is notifying customers:
    • Receive bills by post? You'll get details about the price changes in the BT Update magazine between September and November.
    • Opted out of marketing mail? You'll get a letter with your bill between September and October.
    • Billed online? You will be emailed in October and November.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thanks for that, passed it on to some friends that are fed up with BT

  • Hi

    This is useful info

However, I dont think this will help in my situation. been with BT for years and had enough. Am moving home in Nov and want to cancel the contract that was renewed in Dec 2010.

I've had a patchy service and complained a few times, had 4 replacement modems and 3 new bt vision boxes. Sick of it, and view that as reason enough to leave

Anyone got suggestions how I can extract myself from the contract penalty free?

    Thanks

Different issues, different divisions - not all services have you locked in, so you need to identify these. Even if they fail to deliver a reliable service, they a usually prepared to arrange for a bill credit to cover the loss of service, not a cancellation - so you could be pursuing an impossible dream in hoping to walk away. Even if you terminated (say) your phone and BB. your commitment to BT Vision would still apply. Take it a stage at a time so that you don;t end up maying more than you need to, and make sure nothing rolls-over a commitment, cancel this before you cancel the services it is applied to.

Not answering phones? At least it is more honest than having a polite person who does nothing answer you from Bombay.
