Quick question regarding booking a hotel in Amsterdam...

I'm going Amsterdam this Monday and I'm trying to book a cheap double room somewhere central (as central as possible really).

My budget is around 60 euros a night and I'm not expecting the Ritz for that price, just need somewhere to rest our heads that's clean and hopefully has an ensuite.

I've found one place to book in a perfect location thats around my budget but the reviews aren't that great.

So my plan is to go to Amsterdam without having a hotel booked and seeing if we can get something while we're out there. My logic is that we can check out loads of different hotels (there seems to be hundreds dotted around on Google Maps when I've searched) and see the rooms before we decide so we're not left with any nasty surprises.

Is this a good idea or am I being risky by doing it this way?

What about trying Priceline - Name Your Price but before doing so please read this guide to help you understand how it works - https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/233768

    Have a look here: http://www.iamsterdam.com/nl/visiting/vvv

you used to be able (long ago) to book a hotel at the VVV office just outside central station, Amsterdam, Looks like you could book online beforehand or in person still.
There are loads of hotels in the city and what you could do is go and ask to see what they have before paying. It might be the same as some hotels here where off the street price is a good deal dearer than booked in advance.
Amsterdam is a very walkable city, but if you are out of the centre it has a good public transpost system.

    Enjoy
ps do try to see the Anne Frank house- very thought provoking

  • I would definitely try and book something before you go, prices are usually more expensive, if you haven't prebooked, you don't want to spend the time walking about looking for somewhere cheaper, lugging cases around, when you will probably be tired after travelling, in a place you don't know, and wasting precious relaxing holiday time.
  • Instead of staying at a crappy far away hotel, consider Bed & Breakfast. Example

I'd definitiely try and book before going. When we've not booked before when visiting places you end up wandering around for ages looking at places then paying top rates when you walk in. When we went to Amsterdam we've stayed in two places, think one was called the Avenue Hotel was really OK when we stayed (though think it's changed its name now) and the other I think was a Ramada possbile slightly further down on the other side of the road. They were on the main road down from the railway station so really handily located for when we arrived - not to far to go with cases. Equally it wasn't too far to walk to the main areas either.

I would recommend the Amstel Botel. Its fun sleeping on a boat.

  • Stayed in Amsterdam in July. i really wouldn't go without booking a hotel!
I would think your chances of getting something hal decent for £60 would be extremely thin, though i would love to be proved wrong.:D
We paid more than double that per night for a mid-range decent hotel with breakfast, but even that was not bang in the centre, but a couple of tram stops away.
There was also an extra charge if you wanted tea or coffee making facilities in your room!
Hotel we stayed in twice before which s considered a budget hotel (perfectly fine, but no lifts, tiny rooms and out of the centre) this came up at 90 euros per night with no breakfast.
The ones that were 70 plus had pretty poor reviews. and we didn't want to take the risk.
Good luck in finding somewhere . i love Amsterdam:)
  • Book before you go. You don't want to be wasting time dragging cases round the streets checking out hotels. Booking.com is a good internet site. You won't get much for 60 euros so you have to decide what is most important - location or comfort. City centre will be most expensive but there are a few cheap 2 star hotels there. I would just book a hotel that meets your budget and make the best of it. After all it's just a bed for the night.
