The GreenDeal is snake~oil from the tree e-huggers in general and the government in particular, basically :
    - you get someone to pay for what you want up front
    - you then get the costs added to your energy bills / whatever
    - if you sell or move the next owner / tenant gets lumbered
    - its all about carbon budgets for government, is not free, you still pay
    - read up here

Green deal - if it took off, would be a great investment for the government and the UK.
Spend money now, and greatly reduce required imports of oil/gas 'forever' - the savings may well be significant even 50 years into the future.

As the value of the pound inevitably falls due to the rise of Chinese owned manufacturers that have no skilled jobs in the UK, and the global commodity prices, investment now to reduce future fuel use is a vital thing for the future.

For the homeowner - if you can afford the money, it's generally a better idea to get it done yourself.

    Thanks very much

I clicked on the first link and filled details and it said I had already applied. Which I haven't but did get some insulation from warm front for loft 4 years ago

I know of two people [ one next door the other three doors away ] locally who had E7 type electric storage central heating / water system changed / replaced with to combi gas at a cost in excess of three thousand pounds just last year.

I myself was offered and turned down the same £3.5k deal.

    NOTE £6, 000 means up to .. ..

    - own your own home
    - or rent it from a private landlord
    - up to £3,500 [ or £6,000 if oil central heating is involved ]
    - England only, other schemes operate in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

I have no idea if the central heating replacement still applies in this economic climate of grants in 2011-2012, I'll have a look later and find out.

Hope this helps you and others.

I wonder if they could replace my coal fire in living room its a modern fire with Victorian look but cant afford to use coal and its rubbish too. Would love a gas fire in but keep the Victorian look. I have a through lounger which opens up to dining room and kitchen I do have double doors. Only source of heat we have are ghc and we do have a log burner in dining room but appears to only heat dining room very little heat moves into living room and we tend to shut the doors as its cold

Our tax credits will run out soon and daughter is disabled she is 19 but lives at home, she has a medical condition where she suffers from acute circulation problem so feels the cold

Replacing heating appliances is generally a poor idea if you do it alone - if you can't afford coal, you probably can't afford to heat much more with gas.
Insulation is pretty much required if you're doing this sort of thing.
