I had a full time job and a part time job, my f/t tax code was 247L and my p/t tax code was 500T. My p/t job has now become my full time job and i have left my other job . I have recived my P45 but because i already have a tax code for my other job (500T) they cannot change it to give me a new code and iam paying to much tax, will i need to ring the HMRC myself? what happens now?
thanks in advance.

I have several jobs and the tax codes I am sent are generally wrong. I have always rung up and explained the problem. They are very helpful and shortly after I get notification of the change in tax code in the post.0

The following is from the employers' day to day payroll guide advising what to do about this."If an existing employee gives you a form P45 from a secondissue an amended one if appropriate."
job they have just left you should tell them to send the P45
Part 3 to their HMRC office who will review the tax code and0 -
Thanks, called hmrc and they have put my code back to 747L for week 1? They said i need to ring again when i get my latest payslip for last month so they can make sure it is correct and i will get my money cumulative? Just interested to know what will happen if i dont ring with my latest payslip would my code go back to previous.0

If they don't make the change to cumulative you won't get back any additional tax you have paid since leaving the other job.
So make that call, 0845 3000627Mortgage May 2012 - £129k
January 2015 - Mortgage down to £114k
Target for 2015 to get down to £105k0 -
ok looking back at my '247L' payslips it has, '247L W1' im guessing W1 means week 1 can someone please explain why i have had this on the end of my tax code and what does it mean please??
Thanks!0 -
Week 1 means that your tax is calculated based on your earnings for that week only, as opposed to the entire tax year (cumulative)
It makes a difference if you have not earned anything for say the last few weeks, as you would get the tax free pay included in your tax calculation for those weeks on a cumulative tax code, but not for a W1 code.Mortgage May 2012 - £129k
January 2015 - Mortgage down to £114k
Target for 2015 to get down to £105k0 -
Ok thanks, so if i earned say £100 in week 1 and now this weeks earnings are say £200 i will be taxed only on £100? So in affect im paying to little tax? have i got this right or completly wrong.
Thanks.0 -
I'm probably not explaining it very well. If you're on a week 1 tax code you're probably not being taxed 100% correct but it won't be far off. You're probably paying a little too much tax, call HMRC and they should be able to issue a cumulative code.Mortgage May 2012 - £129k
January 2015 - Mortgage down to £114k

Thanks all.
Ok my code has been put back to cumulative, however they have worked out how much tax i'm due back whilst only in my current job, and not taking in to account my previous job meaning according to them i'am due back a fair amount of money. If i was to take this repayment now, iam worrried come the end of the year i will owe them money? Is there any way i can perhaps tell them to work it out inc my previous job and the tax i payed then?0
