Unwanted phone calls from various charities

  • My neighbour used to give a donation every month to a cancer charity. The charity started ringing every month to increase the donation even saying that the 'little' my neighbour gave wasn't enough!
She lost her temper and rang up the charity and explained that as they had enough money to employ all these telephone sales people they obviously didn't need the 'little' she donated so she was cancelling the Direct Debit!
The best portion of your life will be the small, nameless moments you spend smiling with someone who matters to you.

Copy of a letter I sent to a charity that I had been a member of for several years after a third party company rang me:-

Today I have just received a telephone call from a company called Ethicall
    Ltd.Tel. No 0117 980 8260. a Bristol based company who are apparently a
    fund raising/marketing company.

Not only do they know my name but also that I and my wife are XXXX members
and even the amount of monthly direct debit I pay, they proceeded to try
to get me to increase my monthly subscription.

In view of the number of complaints about this company's methods of cold
calling people and the fact that I can only assume the XXXX have given
them this information, how else would they have got it, I have cancelled
my direct debit and wish to inform you that I am ceasing my membership of
the XXXX, and will be advising others I know to do the same.

I do not find this acceptable and if I find my bank details have been
notified to this outfit I will be considering legal action.

Well done. I think it is reaching the stage where people need defending against charities.

No problem help yourself, as a matter of interest I did get a reply from them, just waffle with no apology and asking me to reconsider, needless to say I declined to reconsider.

  • Hi!

Thanks for all of your replies, while I've been off the thread, I've managed to double-check my registration with TPS and I'm actually surprised to learn that these are the genuine charities.

I had another phone call this morning and could hear in the background clapping and cheering as you'd imagine in a call centre that someone has reached an important target! Well needless to say, I did suggest that Cancer UK stopped calling me and so the caller went on with the guilt trip. I stood my ground and then he recommended some "free" ways to support and I hung up.

It's always nice to know that our charities are nothing more than a bunch of hyperactive call centre kids!

Absence is as important as abundance.

Can I please advise a different approach to canceling your gift?

If you don't want to be phoned by a charity tell them you don't want to be phoned.

Tell them that you don't when you give your first gift or tell them now (by email or by phones) that you don't want to be phoned.
