Help with my first electricity bill please!

Just received my first electricity bill from EDF Energy, stating it's a bill for 28/10 to 5/1. I was under the assumption that a quarterly bill was every 3 months?!

It's an estimated bill. I live in a small 1 bedroom flat and didn't think i wasted / used that much, but my bill surprised me:

For 69 days usage, they estimate I will have used 730 units and have billed me £78.88...

I can't check the meter myself right now as it's based in the cellar of a betting shop that's underneath my flat, which has building work going on and no-one to let me in right now!!

Any relevant comments or suggestions welcome :)

A guess, but the odd period could be to bring your address in to the meter reading cycle for your area Same happened to me when I changed back to Southern after a short time with PG. Are you on a scheme with a higher rate for initial units, e.g. 728 per quarter @ 12p, the rest @ 9p. IMO for a short period account, you woluld be justified in requesting that the higher rate units be reduced to 552 (= 728x69/91) and the lower rate increased accordingly.

The tiers should automatically be pro-rata'd. A quarter is 91 days exactly, but the vast majority of bills sent out aren't for this timeframe (although most fall within a few days either side). Can you imagine what energywatch would have to say if companies didn't?

Oh yes, and oldwiring is right, you will fit on the area billing cycle. It wouldn't be cost effective to send someone to read your meter this week, your neighbour's next week, old Mr Jones down the road a couple of weeks after that, etc., when they could just read em all at once.

re the cost - my bf and I got this quarters (18/09-18/12) bill for our 1-bed flat, not estimated but based on exact meter readings which I supplied, and it was £99.74. We are out at work all day, have gas central heating but an electric hob, the usual TV, PC, some energy saving bulbs but annoying 4 or 6 halogen bulb ceiling lights in the kitchen, lounge and bathroom, run a small de-humidifier for a few hours a few days a week. I don't know if that is average use or not, but it is similar to your cost per day.
I was surprised at the cost of our bill but seeing as I gave the meter readings that were on the bill, they must be right!
(incidentally our last bill before this one was just for 2 months and was £60, for july - sept, so slightly lower then but not much)
