That particular piece of advice is valid.. Lots of youngsters drive Corsas, many of them are driven badly (they're the most popular car in the barryboys.com database for example) and so the insurers see Corsa+young person = risk.

Not so many young people driving Volvos, and when they do it's usually their dad's car so greater risk of earache if they smash it up.

Often young person plus larger more powerful "old man" car can be cheaper. Try a Mondeo too!

sounds similar to my situation, when i was learning, insurance wanted £4000 to add me as a named driver on my dads rover, but only £800 on a brand new 2 litre mondeo estate, just goes to prove, big cars can be cheaper

Plus no self-respecting 18-year old would ever admit to his friends that he had a Volvo... so there's less chance that he'll go tearing round the local estate late at night with three mates in the car egging him on. ;)

Which is kind of ironic really as a RWD 940 Wentworth with the 2 litre turbo engine and a few tweaks would be an awful lot more fun for tearing up the local car park than a FWD 1 litre Corsa. You could get it sideways without having to put McDonalds trays under the back wheels.
