Power adapter standards query

Hi guys,
Im looking to buy a power adapter, but am concerned that while it may supply the same voltage and amperage that I need, the end plug part will be the wrong size and not fit into machine.
Is this possible? or is there a standard that power adapter makers adhere to?
Id rather get a regular power adapter than one of those variable ones that could possibly be configured incorrectly and fry the machine...
Thanks

I'm guessing you're talking about laptop power supplies.
Your best bet is to buy an OE one from eBay. I've not had great experiences with the multi-fit/variable voltage ones.0 -
You can buy milti-voltage ones from places like Maplin which will come with a series of different connectors.
There are a dozen or so individual sizes of connector, these kits usually cover 99% of devices.0 -
THe actual plug that goes into the laptop does come in various sizes, depends on the Laptop make.
the best place to get a adapter is via ebay UK seller not from hong kong, with a high 3 year warranty that way you know its going to last.
heres a uk ebay seller which sells them with 3years warranty.

you'll need to type in your laptop model and number, or use the old powersupply model number on the silver sticker.
and heres a uk ebay seller which sells the clover lead cable

As one of the previous posters said if you post your make/model # into ebay search you should find what you're looking for.
There is a myriad of different sizes the most common have either a 2.1 or 2.5mm internal diameter pin and 5 or 5.5mm external diameter. Again some have a short plug others a long. There again Dells are bespoke and I think soime HP's too.
So it is best to get the right one for the model in question.0
