Sony Vaio problems - screen and cursor.

Hi all,

I have a couple of problems with my laptop and wondered if anybody could help..

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-Z21WN which I'm really happy with. I've owned the laptop from new, and apart from the internal fan running almost constantly have had no complaints.

I'm fairly good with tech stuff - upgrading memory and hard drives, formatting and installing new operating systems, boot and rescue disks etc, and have recovered friends machines a few times.

The problems here are:

1/ I have 2 vertical lines on the screen as soon as I boot the machine up. The screen isn't cracked and everything loads as fast as normal. The machine came with Vista Business installed, but I 'downgraded' to XP Pro which I found much better. All XP drivers were included with Sony rescue cd. I have now installed Windows 7 Ultimate as a trial, but the lines are still there.
2/ Even with a fresh install of windows, when typing with the touchpad, the cursor often jumps to a diffeernt place  ..unless I check on the screen after each word, I can find I have typed a sentence and the letters are all over the place. It's really infuriating and wastes so much time.

I keep the laptop up to date, with windows update, Kaspersy anti-virus and regularly do registry scans/ clean cache etc, but nothing solves the problem.

Any help would be really appreciated

sounds perhaps more like a hardware problem -- could be the graphics chipset or indeed the internals of the screen itself. esp. given u have done a new install and the prob. still remains ....

has it got nvidia graphics http://www.nvidiadefect.com/

the touchpad problem isn't finger brushing against it as you type?

    is it well ventilated?

The fan on constantly is because the heatsink is blocked solid with fluff. If you've got two vertical lines when you hook up an external monitor, that blocked heatsink has fried the motherboard chipset.
  • Thanks all for those replies  I've just read them and will update later today.
