Mot ran out and insurance will run out between test, will they still insure me?

Basically I lost the envelope with all my car bits in, I had it in my head that everything ran out on the 5/9/11 but it seems that my mot ran out on wednesday, ive managed to get it booked in for saturday but my insurance runs out at 12 tomorrow.

I do realise I cant drive the car other than to the mot which is fine but will there be any issues with starting a new insurance policy while the mot has ran out by a few days?, I do realise the car probably wont be insured while the mot is not issued but will they be ok with issuing insurance on an uninsured car?.

Having no MOT doesn't stop you buying insurance.

And although legally you need an MOT, no insurer can invalidate a policy simply because you have no MOT.

(You need to keep your car "roadworthy" for insurance purposes - holding an MOT cert does not mean the car is roadworthy)

It's been covered many times on this forum. Even if your insurance has a clause stating no MOT = no insurance this clause is unenforcible and the ombudsman will overrule it. Just renew as normal, don't even mention that the MOT has expired, get your MOT done on Saturday, happy days.

You are doing everything right, don't worry about it.
  • Thanks all, I thought so. I guess it would be an impossible catch 22 otherwise which would effectively leave cars stuck on the drive. It was an honest mistake. :)

You can't drive the car with no insurance, even to an MoT test, as far as I'm aware that only applies to tax and MoT expiration.

If you drive to the MOT with no insurance and you get pulled they will take impound the car, £150+ to get it back.

+ 6 - 8 points on your licence and when the insurance find that out expect lots to say no thanks or quote
numbers that will make your eyes water.

Luckily he is not suggesting any intention of driving to the MOT without insurance, this thread is about whether or not he can buy suitable insurance with an expired MOT.

It seems I got the wrong end of the stick, due to what I've outlined in bold text.

OP said the insurance runs out the day before the MOT.

OP is asking whether there will be a problem renewing the insurance without an MoT, so they're wanting to get insurance before driving it to the MoT center. Took me a few seconds to realise that as well though. Just as well as you obviously can't drive a car without insurance under any circumstances.

There will be no problem, just renew as normal.

Nothing better to do than quote me and post in every thread I do, huh? Sad little boy.

Still, at least you'll start back at school soon and have something to do then, even if it's picking your smashed glasses up from the floor and crying about the dinner money the big boys stole from you.
