Hi
Anyone heard of or tried this onlive thing?
http://www.onlive.com/
its cloud gaming, connect to the game via the net and play full spec PC games on any machine. Even the slowest laptop can run top end games.
Thought maybe could get a discussion going. Pros/Cons. I've been trying the US service (Euro one coming at the end of Sep)

No physical media so I'm out.
From what I've read the graphics aren't as good as playing them on a PC/console from the disc, but they will play on low end machines as the grunt is done at their end.
Unless they can come to an agreement with ISP's re bandwidth it's dead in the water in the UK. I believe they're in discussions with BT.0 -
There is no machine, as such, that it plays on, so it will run for everyone. You simply plug the device into your router at one end and the tv the other. I have heard very good things about it. Graphics aren't as good as having the game locally, but if the game play is good then it's not such a problem.
From some demos I have seen, games launch almost instantly and there is a lot of choice. Definitely the way forward I say.
I believe BT is the preferred partner for the UK launch.0 -
Agree about the ISPs and bandwith. Really all the ISPs in this country need a good kick up the !!!! and know that we need more monthly allowance. What with so much streaming and downloading going on.
The Graphics to be fair are just as good (from what i've played) maybe a slight drop in shadows and detail but hey i'll take that to be able to play the top end games on my cheap laptop rather than spend out on a £200+ ps3 or £1000 pc!
Lot of people seem to mention about no physical media but I don't get it. Is it because you worry the company will go under and all your stuff is lost? Guess that could happen
and some people just like having the box itself?
Of course still to early to know if this will work but the way I see things going everything will be 'cloud based' games, films, music
(just a guess

the issue i see is more to do with the payment method - monthly subscription and if you stop you cant play any games any more
also pings/lag will be a problem for a lot of people, not even taking into account line speed and download limits and network congestion
currently i see it as a good idea but will suffer due to the UK's broadbands networkDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0
