ipod touch 4g not seeing photos in explorer, and external drive errors also

Hi :-)
This one is driving me dotty, lol ... apple cable replaced by cheapie cable ... that then just replaced with £16 very sturdy cable [composite, but not using that; just looked like the most durable cable on sale in tesco!]... but not seeing the ipod photos in explorer seems to be errors in software/windows?, as I can reboot the pc and then itunes sees the ipod [but not photos in explorer]. Having such problems all the time with the ipod and the external drive [shows up as empty drive] ... again faffing on with rebooting, unplug/replug. Got a lot of photos to back up from ipod ... do art and really need to be able to backup sketches etc.
Would really appreciate help.
