Back to Uni .......

Options
I am being made redundant shortly and thinking about going back to Uni to do a PGCE (big redundancy payout will fund it) .....

(1) With no income and not "working" I presume my (non working) wife's child tax credit of £545 per year will stop (I earm too much to get the WFTC).

(2) Students get council tax exemption. Given that I will be a student with a non working spouse do we pay no council tax at all or is it just me that is exempt meaning a 75% council tax bill?

For question 2, looking at

http://www.sefton.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=3416

"Certain people will be disregarded when calculating the number of adults resident in a dwelling and therefore it is possible for a discount to apply in some cases where there are two or more adults resident. Adults who are disregarded for discount purposes are as follows:-

Spouses of students where the spouse is not a U.K. citizen and is thereby prevented from seeking employment or claiming benefits."

As my spouse is British, but doesn't work I would read this as she is NOT a disregarded person and, as such, I would have to pay 75% council tax on her behalf.

Is this true?

You still get child tax credit (just not any working tax credit) - in fact as your income goes down you may get more than you are now - not sure how reduncy payments affect it.

Council tax you get 25% discount. I'm a full time student, dh is a stay at home dad and we have to pay 75%

The council tax will be reduced by 25% for only having one adult in the house that has to pay it however there is of cause the means tested council tax benefit she can claim if your family savings are low enough
