Well i have a pc with win xp pro on and i have a spare harddrive. Now i dont want to format as i only just did a install of xp on. but it would be good for extra storage when needed. I have put the haddrve in the pc on the secondary ide cable which is also connected to the cd drive. What do i need to do for windows to detect it in mycomputer?
Things that are free in life are great, well most of the time

Need to make sure your jumpers are set correctly - master for first device on cable then slave. Also check your BIOS to make sure channel is set to auto detect......
As a guess I think that you'll need to change the harddrive jumper to slaveNeil0 -
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management
See if it's listed there. You will need to assign a drive letter to it (e.g. F:) before XP will recognise it properly.
If it's not listed there, you'll have to check if BIOS detects it on startup. If not, it's likely you haven't set it as a slave.0 -
If you set the HDD to cable select thats a doozy
