BT - Phone wont work, broadband ok (ish)

Hi there
Over weekend, the phoneline stopped working - no dial tone/engaged when someody tries to ring us.
The broadband connection works to a point, but my laptop does have to be restarted quite regularly.
I have plugged the phone/laptop directly into the test socket (behind the lower cover) and it works fine. Can I leave it as it is plugged in here to avoid call out costs etc? Also, will it affect the current plan (all daytime/evening/weekend calls)?
Thanks

If you have the phone and the laptop plugged in to the master socket together and they both work, no problem0

Thanks for the quick reply, cheers!0

Was it plugged into an extension before? - removing the extension bell wire might help - google it.
Are you saying the phone works plugged into the test socket, but not elsewhere?
Haven't you got a wireless router?!!

Ill look into the extension bell wire, thanks.
Yeah, the test socket is upstairs, it was originally plugged into an extension in the front room. It doesnt work in the upstars socket either, only the front socket.
It is a wireless router0 -
I was interested in your post as mine also went dead at the w/e, however it didn't work in the master socket.
I'm sure you know, but in case you don't, the NTE5 master socket demarks where BT responsibility ends. So if it works in the master socket the problem is yours and BT charges an arm and a leg to fix.
Sounds to me like you have a wiring problem (loose/detached wire?), or even the slave socket might be faulty. You actually only need 2 wires to work the extension, so just make sure they are attached at the master (on the removed faceplate), and at each slave - they sometimes come out if they are a push fit.
Look here for diagrams etc
