Dell Inspiron 2200 with a BSD on startup.

I have tried to change the boot order to load the XP installation disk and the darned password is set. Owner has no knowledge / documentation.

I have a caddy and have loaded the HD on there. I can see the files so it's not completely fried and it runs free of virus under Kaspersky. Still get BSD when run as main drive.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Press f12 on startup and it should bring up a boot menu where you can select the DVD drive.

Caddy it, plug it into another machine, then run the boot disk from there?

It won't allow a change of boot order without the password.

I've tried Ultimate Boot Disk and I can't get to the drive in DOS (it's on USB).

Is there any way of doing a boot disk repair on a drive on a USB caddy?

I don't want to swap out my HD from my own lappy if I can help it.

Yanking the CMOS battery and main battery hasn't cleared the BIOS password (well, it was worth a try!) otherwise I could change the boot order and run a CD.

    Sorted the password.

Can at least change the boot order now.

Once the boot order was sorted I ran Ultimate Boot Disc and went through all the diagnostics etc.

    Reboot.

    Now working.

    Thanks, folks.
