Hi,
If I buy a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate Edition (Upgrade Retail):
a) Can I only use it on one machine? I recall on a newsgroup somewhere someone said that if you buy a retail edition of XP you can install it on 2 machines in the same household.
b) Do I have to have a specific version of Windows to upgrade from? Can I upgrade from Windows XP Pro, or can I upgrade from Windows XP Home?
c) If I buy the upgrade version, do I have to have Windows XP installed and then upgrade, or can I do a clean install and just point to the Windows XP disc and enter maybe its licence key?
Thanx

You cant install XP legally on 2 machines at the one time with the same key and you cant do this for Visya either..AMO wrote:b) Do I have to have a specific version of Windows to upgrade from? Can I upgrade from Windows XP Pro, or can I upgrade from Windows XP Home?
I think you need XP pro to use the Ultimate upgradeAMO wrote:c) If I buy the upgrade version, do I have to have Windows XP installed and then upgrade, or can I do a clean install and just point to the Windows XP disc and enter maybe its licence key?
If you are buying retail then you can clean install
A little extract for you as well from the EULA for Vista..
UPGRADES. To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the software that is eligible
for the upgrade. Upon upgrade, this agreement takes the place of the agreement for the software
you upgraded from. After you upgrade, you may no longer use the software you upgraded from.
So therefore you wil no longer be able to use your copy of XP..0 -
Often it is better/easier to buy an oem version,
this basically means when you buy it, you need to buy a core piece of hardware for your computer such as a processor or memory, printers or monitors do not count
overclockers.co.uk do a full range of vista products.
From that site the ultimate upgrade costs £235, LINK
where as the oem version of ultimate is £135, 64 bit LINK or 32 bit LINK
You do not get the flashy box, but you get the full version for £100 less, but you do need to buy that piece of core hardware, I suggest spending the money on memory, since vista eats it.0 -

But you are restricted to how many times it can be activated and it cant be transfered to another system..0 -

Does that physically get implemented? I mean, does the upgrade ask for the XP key so that it can disable it during authentication should you use it in the future?
Thanx

I'd doubt it as many of the XP keys are generic. In practice, I think Microsoft just keep a database of known 'stolen' XP keys and then don't allow it to get past Windows Genuine Advantage.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world
