what colour debit card should we have?

Options
My OH and I have 3 joint acconts with Natwest. We have select, current plus and a really old step account. We also have cheque books for the select and current plus accounts.

All of our debit cards are blue and none of them work at the pay at pump in Asda.

My OH has been into the bank and querried the cards not working at the pumps in Asda, and the man said that there should not have been a problem as we have the "full service" cards(???), however, we have just returned from holiday and had the same problem at Asda again.

We have noticed that online it shows the select account with a purple debit card, yet we have never received it.

Could anyone please shed any light on this for us.

Thanks in advance

The blue debit card is the full authorisation card and won't work in pay at pump machines. The purple card is the full off-line card (used to also be a cheque guarantee card) and is issued on the Select account only if your credit score is good enough

If you want a purple debit card "offline" to enable you to use pay pumps etc. You will need to speak to lending or your branch.

Just because you have a select account it does not guarantee you will get an offline debit card.

Many staff members dont know the difference between them now the CGC is not in use.

I have the blue debit card and have never had a problem with any pay at the pump at Asda or Morrisons.

My card does not work in self-service petrol pumps, why is this?
If your Visa Debit card replaces a Solo card (and begins with the numbers 4751 27 or 4751 28) this cannot be used in unattended Point of Sale terminals. This card type can only be used at a retailer or supplier of services where they can authorise the transaction with us at the time of the transaction being made and self-service terminals, such as those on trains or at petrol pumps, cannot perform such an authorisation.

My "blue" Visa Debit card (replacing Solo) works at train ticket machines (surprised:)) that don't work with Visa Electron, but not at Morrisons Pay@Pump:(. Could that different behaviour be explained by not having funds for the £100 fill pre-authorisation, even if there was sufficient funds to "fill the tank".

In other words, if had more than the pump limit on the card should it work?

Mine never work at Asda but they do at Tescos. I suppose because there is also a kiosk at the Tesco one, but no people at the Asda ones. I have one blue (replaced Solo) and one purple (replaced Maestro)

Just had another look at it, my daughters say its more purple than blue, so that might explain it :o

I used to work for Asda and worked on the fuel station for a few months. The machines just didnt like some cards even though the cards were valid for use 'offline'. We had several customers having the same problem, most were resolved by them using one of their other accounts but some just wouldnt work at all so they went elsewhere.

My Lloyds Tsb debit card won't work at Asda petrol pumps, even though it used to work, months ago.

I have to use a credit card now. It's very annoying, but I've seen a lot of other people having the same problem.

Maybe it's a problem with the pumps at the Gateshead store.
