Insurance for two dogs

To people who have more than one dog or cat, do you have all your animals on one policy?

Are there any particular companies that offer good discounts for multiple pets?

Aviva offer a 10% discount for additional pets after insuring the first but it is still only one pet per policy.

I'm not aware of insurers who would insure more than one pet on a single policy but if this is allowed I'd be wary as all it would take would be some unfortunate timing with conditions, particularly if one or both were ongoing conditions, for the cover limit to be used up quickly.

Thanks, its new to me so I'm doing some serious googling!
  • Direct Line certainly do (currently 12 months for 9 & 15% multi-pet) and pretty sure Argos do too - there may well be others if you have a good hunt around!
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!

Theres a huge sticky thread on here re insurance, its a mine field!

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/108056

Read a few months worth of that thread to get a feel for the subject.

I have my dogs with two different insurers basically because once you claim or even go to a vet to ask about a pets illness/condition then that will be excluded from a new insurance policy :( Hence one dog is stuck on M and S (which was a brilliant policy when it first came out, reasonable price and NO excess) because he has a long term condition - the premium has shot up for everyone but we are stuck with them, having said that they are still a good policy. My other boy is with AXA.

I'm ploughing through the sticky! It really is a minefield, and for every good comment about an insurer there's a negative one!

I'm adopting two middle aged rescue dogs (hopefully!) so I want to make sure that I won't be high and dry if anything comes up, that's my biggest fear. I'm leaning towards Petplan based on comments on a few sites, but its over £50 a month for the two of them! Bye bye gym membership...

Argos was a bit confusing, it said 'life cover' but then had small print that seemed to contradict that.

    Oh well, I'll keep trawling!

This may sound a bit daft but if the policy is approx £50 and you are prepared to pay that, I was just wondering.....what about putting away £50 into a regular saver a/c? Pet insurance won't cover you for basics and I assume there is an excess of what? £40? or more.
    Just a thought

Thanks, but I don't have much in savings at the moment, and a lot of it will go on initial costs, so if something awful happens in the first few years costing thousands in vets bills I won't be able to cover it.

That £50 a month is more valuable to me as a way to access £5000+ if I need it than in the bank. Even if I actually end up never claiming I need the cover just in case.

AXA offers an all round decent policy - have you had a quote for that?

I know what you mean though - it churns my stomach when people come on here or other pet forums and say their 12 month or limited pot policy has run out of money and they still have an ongoing serious illness with their pet.

Axa talks about its vet fees cover as being 'per period of insurance' so I don't think that's life cover, is it?

Yes, the period of insurance is the year, so each year the amount is topped up again. I dont know if they also do a cheaper policy now but certainly there usual one is £7k per year, topped up to £7k every year.

    Section 1 - Veterinary fees
    What We will pay
All reasonable costs for Treatment of Your Pet by a Vet for Illness, Condition or injury up to the Maximum Benefit of £7,000 per Period of Insurance
