Hi,

We moved house 3 weeks ago into a brand new property. We need to stay with the building company's energy supplier for 30 days but after that we are free to change to whoever we want to use. The house is a lot bigger than our last one but with better insulation etc and we won't have a proper bill by the 30 day point to be able to do a proper price comparison so is it best just to take a few readings and go on a daily usage instead? We are medium users for electricity and high for gas at present (from the old house).

Any suggestions will be most welcome.

Energy usage in the middle of summer (yes it is still summer, believe it or not) will be significantly less than in the middle of winter.

You ideally need your total annual usage, and that can't be simply extrapolated from a summers day usage.

If you don't know your annual usage and want to switch supplier, you can take a chance with the comparison sites that offer you a result by your usage characteristics (size of building, number of occupants, etc).

Alternatively, just stay with your current supplier but ask them for advice on their best tariff.

As a new homeowner, I would have thought you would have 1001 other, more important things to do than think about changing energy supplier at present.

You do not have to wait the 30 days before switching, you can start the process immediately on moving in. Your new supplier then take care of the 30 days notice, the switch normally takes between 4 and 6 weeks, that includes the 30 days.
