Nationwide Select Platinum

Just had this drop through our door as a replacement for the gold card. The gold card hardly ever gets used. It was originally taken out purely for the "holiday" wallet.
Nationwide then withdrew the 0% commision on foreign exchange outside of Erope. Though it was still a good card for use in Europe. I did have a minor complaint to Nationwide at the time, but the mortgage is with them, and their regular savers isn't a bad deal for up to £1000 a month.

Anyway this Nationwide Select Platinum card removes the benefits of certain insurances but it is back to being a 0% commision exchange card world wide again. Plus 0.5% cash back on £ sterling purchases. Seems to qualify you must cycle more than £750 through their flex account. I just have £1000 passing through on its way to savings accounts, no D/D's or standing orders.

Can't find anything online about them yet has anybody else got on and have i read the T&C's correctly, before i go and book a flying holiday in florida, If the wife will let me :P

Feel free to move this to travel money if it is better suited there

Yep I got one and won't bother. I have other cards for foreign usage now. I used to put alot though NW Gold. If they resumed 0% in Asia, I'd continue with it.

Don't like the way they are tying products together. Insurance with the flex account etc etc. (Probably end in a misselling thing!) Turnover on the flexaccount gets you this card etc.

Some months there are no transactions on the Flexaccount. Others I put a few grand through. Just depends where I am in the world. I don't really fit their profile of having a "main account" where a neat £xK goes through each month. I don't have DDs or SOs either.

Personally I'd like NW to de-mutialise and pick up a bonus.

    Just re reading the T&C's

"Unlimited commision free card use abroad - all purchases overseas on your new card will now be completely free of any charges"

Seems like it would apply to Asia from that statement. So seems like a good card for purchases but not good for ATM withdrawls.

Thanks, yes. If they put 0% back on the gold card I'd use it again. But I'm not prepared to change my current account usage just to get 0% loading when I can get this on Post Office and Zero (which I do have) and a couple of others which I don't have. Zero, of course, is fee free on ATM withdrawals too.

Yes would like the Zero unfortunately can't abide Santander, had an ISA with them and had to pay it in by Cash they wouldn't take a debit card payment. And went to have a look at switching to them but they just gave the air of not being bothered. So unfortunately I don't meet the requirements of having a mortgage current account or investments with them anymore

On another thread someone mentioned you could get Zero in a branch even if you don't have another account with them. Anyway I can understand if you've had enough of them - alot of people have complained about their service. Personally I've found their online system reliable and their UK-based call centre fine the few times I've called. Zero's been blocked overseas a couple of times, but that's normal.

Maybe for next years ISA they may be a bit more friendly in which case I'd be able to qualify. Although maybe not.... All banks seem to go through phases I can remember when Barclays were a pig to deal with, now they can't do enough to help, even coming out to the house for meetings, maybe i have better coffee then their kitchen lol.
So maybe this is Santander at the bottom of their useless customer service cycle and the only way is up

  • Just had a letter through today saying that I will be receiving one as well. From a quick glance through the T&Cs it seems pretty good. I was about to change to a Halifax Credit Card for spending abroad but seems I won't have to know.

Maybe they realised alot of people left Nationwide becasue they took away so many perks. Good to see we get some back. I just wish they would bring back free cash withdrawals abroad from the FlexAccount and I'd be a happy customer!

  • My letter came through yesterday.

Good timing as I'm off to America in December so will take less cash with me and put more on plastic.
