where i work we take it in turns to buy the present for people - whenever i've bought a gift i let others know how much it cost and ask them to contribute if they want to. i put an envelope in my tray for people to put money in and leave a card with it. anyone can sign the card. we make quite an occasion of birthdays and it's worth the occasional £2 contribution for regular slabs of birthday cake!0
