Right now, 50p is about all I've got in my purse.

I hate work collections especially when it's for someone I don't really like! I tend to pass them on without contributing as I usually can't afford it but it does annoy me that they often attached a name list to the envelope. I just cross my name off.

I find it very embarrassing saying no all the time. Don't get me wrong, if i know someone really well or it's my immediate team mates then I will put money in. But the constant office collections for people I barely know I find a bit too much. And it's never just 50p. There's always a recommended amount. £2, £3, sometimes £5. I give to a charity through my wages every month but someone rattling a tin at me makes me feel so embarrassed saying no. The looks some people give you! _pale_
I'm really struggling at the moment and could do without it all.

Nobody tells me how much to put in a collection, so if someone "recommended" an amount to me, I would recommend that they go away - empty handed!

Sorry but not contributing is very hurtful to the people involved if you have been working with them for a long time.

50p and a signature on a card (in our organisation no contribution, no signature) I have just lost a friend who didnt want to
contribute, plenty of money, no worries, she just said to the collector 'no thanks; her sig was not on the card, so of course I
knew and was very hurt and upset. I cannot understand why when we have been friends for so long. So like I say
50p can save an awful lot of heartache

Apparently not very good friends if you'd give up that friendship for 50p :(

I used to work in a dept which had 250 staff so someone was always leaving or having a birthday, we were told that the expected amount was £5, this end up being quite expensive.

250 staff at £5 each. What did you buy them with the £1,250 ;)

I worked and contributed to various collections for thirty odd years, marriages, births, retirements, etc, probably the equivelant of £1000+, unfortunately the practice died out before I was made redundant, so I & my fellow redundants(?), ended up paying for the farewell drinks (on the basis that we were cash rich)!

We have all sorts of charity events (oh the pressure to give, but my job used to be in charitable fundraising and I've raised thousands for charity so I hope it buys me a bit of time)....we also have bake sales, book sales, social club events....all in the name of charity. THEN we have birthdays, leaving do's, baby showers, wedding gifts, get well soon etc etc. Our department as 43 people in it and on average we have approx 10 - 15 events a month. I used to give £1 but times are tight and I now only give to those who I'm good friends with. My purse has been empty for the last 2 weeks with very little in my bank account....so on that basis I just can't afford to give for these types of things. It doesn't mean I don't want to.

I tend to just ask people to leave it with me, then I sign the card and pass it on. Alternatively I say that I don't have any cash on me, you'd be suprised how many people say this. You could also try keeping some change just for these types of things in your desk draw. I'm talking lots of 2p's and 5p's so that you can at least make the 'clinking sound'.
    Don't Throw Food Away Challenge January 2012 - £0.17 / £10
    Grocery Challenge 16th Jan - 19th Feb 2012 - £254.72/£200 (Ooops very bad start)
    Grocery Challenge 20th Feb - 8th March 2012 - £0/£200
  • It's the same where I work - so many births, marriages, leaving and special birthdays! I usually ask them to leave it with me and then sign it and put my shrapnel in (if I have any)!

this can be an annoyance at work

i have before been asked to hand over a tenner (small office) so i willingly did so for 5 peoples birthdays
then when mine came around it was a different tactic
just put in what you want
    i didnt give again

and another place i worked i could not stand the person going on mat leave so i didnt put owt in or sign the card, but that damn envelope for collection kept coming back
i ended up crossing my name out, not sure i made myself plain enough

another colleage put in how much she thought of them so if she could not stand em she would put in 2p, if she liked em a fiver

nowadays we buy cards for those we want to and so no collecting
    63 mortgage payments to go.

    Zero wins 2016 😥

There's always someone organising these things, they are annoying. I give £5 each time. We don't get a chance to pass on as it is to be handed into reception. I don't mind giving to people close or a celebration but it does get silly. I was asked this week if I would like to put money in WEEKLY into a pot. I said no but do feel pressured to give each time. What's more I work in a different dept than the majority so probably earn half of what most earn which is annoying, not much advice for the OP as I'm a bit rubbish myself but if you really can't afford it maybe say so? People might sympathise and feel the same! X
