Are you renting already, or will this be a totally new benefit claim? Reason I ask is that the LHA don't move very quickly on new claims, and it may be as much as 8 weeks before your money comes through. You will have to find rent until that time, plus pay your deposit, and cost of any vetting/credit check fees charged by your LL or agent.
You may also find it very difficult to get LLs who will take you as benefit tenants, as some refuse. Before you get too far into viewing and paying for credit checks etc, make sure the LL is aware you will be on benefits, otherwise you may pay non-refundable fees only to find out they will not accept you as tenants anyway!0 -

I got some when I was earning around £13k in 2009 - covered almost half my rent (for a flat - I was over 25).0 -

but, under the rules the council have to assess your claim within 14 days of receiving all information with which to assess your claim (it doesnt count if you give them information which they need to confirm or clarify - its only when they say they have all the right information)
at that stage they can assess your claim but as its paid in arrears you will get your first months payment after you have moved in, but you can minimise the delay by claiming as soon as (or 5 days before) your tenancy start date, ensure that they have all the correct information, then chase them after the 14 days as they have a legal obligation to assess
then you shouldnt wait too long0
