  • I do not know why you sent original documents unless your return was being audited, because HMRC do not require these to verify entries on tax returns? Just curious?

I'm not required to do self-assessment. Basically I gave up work 2 years ago after having my second child and have been doing exam marking (on temporary contracts) to get some extra money. As this is seasonal work I do not earn enough to pay tax, but I get taxed from each of the examination boards so have to claim it back afterwards.

The tax office told me they only accepted original documents.

Each exam board I work for has a different tax office and for some reason none of my tax records link up. When I speak to one tax office they have no records that I've done any work for anyone else - it amazes me.
