DVD Hard Drive Recorder Remote Not Working Well

My Panasonic DVD recorder is about two years old and the remote is not so responsive. Before I have taken apart and cleaned out, especially the sticky gunge, but this time doing the same and it works a bit better but still not like it did.

Any ideas as I don't want the expense of buying a new one.

Oh and yes I have tried new batteries. :D

Have you checked the receiver "window" on the recorder itself to make sure it's free of dust, etc as well?

You must be doing something with your remotes that differs from me.

I have Panasonic remotes for VHS recorders, DVD recorders and TVs. I've had the VHS and TV since the mid-1990s and the DVDs since 2000s, and I've not got 'sticky gunge' in any of them.

What on earth are you doing to them?

Best not to delve too deeply but maybe a different channel bundle... ;)

What sort of sticky gunge, and what did you use to clean it?

If it's anything like orange juice, coke, or coffee it's possible there is still a coating on the contacts that register the key presses, the best way to clean them is with something like isopropyl alcohol and a cotton bud, as that'll tend to clean it without causing any problems, and any left over will evaporate away :) (great stuff for cleaning contacts on keyboars/remotes, a lot of plastic*, and printer heads)

*Do NOT use on screens though.

Thanks I will try this next. :T

I think the sticky gunge is sweat off your hands when you use it and I must admit it is sitting in my hand for long periods of time.

Thanks for all the replies :T

:T Good point as I have not checked this and it could be as simple as that. But will do thanks.

is the underside of the mat, and are the contacts completely clean and are the 2 correctly lined up? Good batteries, or pound shop ones?

I did clean but will take another, more careful, look.

    All lined up.

Duracell batteries and tesed with my battery tester to make sure they really do have the oomph in them.

    Thanks for the advice

use isopropyl alcohol if you have any, but don't buy specially, and dry off with a clean cloth. Try the mat in place before fitting in the casing - a slight misalignment of the mat will cause problems. Poor batteries usually results in a range problem, ie it may work close up, but not far away
