@Spiggle You should know how much Techies fall in love with their equipment from Graphics Cards to Cases to Smartphones to an assortment of gadgetry. If a product is good you are their own advertisement for it!! (provided of course you get impeccable customer service help etc).

Men salivate over their cars, motorbikes etc. No stigma there!! My vintage Harley davidson and my need to keep wolf t bay. The Harley Davidson is the most comfortable easy ride with good suspension etc.

@Percy I own my own Iphone (pressie) MSE Brownie Point
It's PAYG which ranges from £15-20pcm ( there is a fine line between Contract and PAYG this is it).
It is a Iphone3GS which means I can use GPS, download Maps, get Traffic data etc meaning if I install Toms Satnav I could stick it into a holder and me and driver can be satnaved to our destination.
GPS maps help for walking and waymarking (ok they cost but worth it as it is on one wee device).
The Iphone is truly multi-functional. It is my main camera (added Camera apps for proper utility), a phone!!, a texter (obviously) I can install apps which mean I can see if message is recived.
I can use IM, read books. Download podcasts. I can blog on the go. This is just a taster and a very rough post to get the ball rolling.
My apps even though i feel effectively forced into paying for them mean I gain added functionality with my iphone which ends up saving me money ie a professional audio recorder suitable for podcasting etc meaning I can podcast, friends can record songs etc.

The Iphone 3GS
1. Audio Recorder on ONE Device and not several devices.
2. Camera and apps.
3. Maps Navigation especially useful in the Highlands well that's the plan!
4. Documents easily accessible on one small device.
5.Notetaking on the go I use Evernote (shock horror faint etc).
6. Music (obviously)
7)Music Apps!!! I could literally experiment with making music as well as learning it because of Iphone.
8) Sleuthing!!! the recorder app could come in handy!!!
9) Journalism recording well recording podcastable qaulity of relevant data pertinent to interests.
10)Shopping
MSE crew are probably gonna say you can do it on a Laptop why get Iphone.
a few thoughts in the right direction.

Wee hardware device means more scope for more interesting life from blogging on the go to a whole range of professional functionalities.

All sounds great, my phone costs £10 a month, the phone was a gift from t-mobile (free), I don't use some of the functions you mention but a quick app search shows I can do all the above. I will add google maps navigation is free and better than any navigation on the iphone (last time I checked I will admit).

+ I got £50 cashback.

As I say I am not against smart phones as they can be great money saving/useful tools but when it comes to andoid vs apple the lack of apple premium tax makes a massive difference.
